ADHD Chronicles: When the Yeti Went AWOL

“Size matters not” – Yoda.

That’s right, folks, size matters not when it comes to the mysterious labyrinth of ADHD forgetfulness. I learned this the hard way when I somehow lost my Yeti – a microphone, that is, not an abominable snowman. Yetis are, in fact, as difficult to lose as actual Himalayan Yetis are to find. They’re large, they’re heavy, they’re shiny and they’re usually wired to your computer.

You’d think a behemoth like a Yeti Microphone would be harder to lose. It’s hefty, commands a prominent spot on your desk, and let’s not forget it’s not exactly pocket-sized. However, this Yeti decided to go on an adventure in the tundra of my daily distractions.

Keeping track of smaller, everyday items like keys and phones is a sport for me. It’s like playing a daily game of hide and seek, and inanimate objects always have the home advantage. Despite all this, losing the Yeti took my forgetfulness to a whole new level. It was a bit like misplacing an elephant in your living room or failing to locate a lighthouse in your backyard. Not the typical “Ah! Where did I put my glasses?” (while they’re sitting comfortably on your nose). It was more “How the heck did I misplace a microphone the size of a small pterodactyl?”

Yet, here we are, the microphone was gone, and I was left to wallow in my befuddlement. It had me questioning whether I had reached peak forgetfulness, or perhaps, if I’d simply discovered a new superpower: Vanishing large objects!

In my quest for solutions to such ADHD-induced phenomena, I stumbled upon tech tracking – a godsend for scatterbrains everywhere. With compact, attachable gadgets like Tile, Apple AirTags, and Orbit, even the slipperiest of items could be tethered to our technologically enlightened reality. However, sticking an Apple AirTag on a Yeti microphone feels a bit ridiculous. Possible, but should it really be necessary?

The case of my lost Yeti taught me the importance of applying my ADHD strategies. One such tool I swear by is my ‘inner voice-over’ technique. Think of it as having Morgan Freeman or David Attenborough narrating your everyday tasks. “And here we see the human, in its natural habitat, putting the Yeti back on the desk where it belongs, rather than in the fridge with the leftover lasagna.”

With this technique, I create a mental image and voice-over for the most mundane tasks, giving them a Hollywood spotlight they never knew they needed. It’s amazing how much easier it is to remember where you put your keys when you imagine it as an Oscar-winning scene. However, it’s apparent that my inner narrator fell asleep on the job that day, leaving my Yeti to wander off into the wilderness of my home.

I am still looking for that Yeti, though I checked all the obvious places. In the end, the moral of this story isn’t just that people with ADHD can lose anything, anywhere (though, we really, really can). It’s also a testament to our creativity in devising strategies to outwit our forgetfulness. From tech trackers to dramatic narrations, we’ve got you covered. So, to anyone who’s ever misplaced their glasses, keys, phone, or even a Yeti microphone – remember, you’re not alone.
